My opinion story

Story: School shootings are taking over the United States

Occurring about once a week, in America there has been 300 school shootings since 2013. All these incidents have led to one or more deaths. School shootings have affected hundreds of thousands of people, all over the country. Many parents think that their kids are very safe at school. Lately, the news has been proving otherwise.

In my opinion, parents shouldn't have to worry even the slightest about having to lose a child due to a shooting. It is unacceptable that there are kids who go through such a traumatic experience at such a young age. There are various of times where I ask myself, "Who has the heart to hurt and kill other humans that just want to live a good life?" Congress should be enacting new gun laws and making the gun stores have more thorough background checks.

For example, since January of 2018 there has been about 17 school shootings in the United States. We are four months into 2018, and there already has been 17 school shootings. You would think that after the very first school shooting, Congress would do something about it. If the Congress actually did more to protect schools, there wouldn’t be any school shootings occurring.

“We have to have action. We don’t have any action,” Mr. Trump complained. “A week goes by, ‘Let’s keep talking.’ Another week goes by, we keep talking. Two months go by — all of the sudden, everybody is off to the next subject. Then, when it happens again, everybody is angry and, ‘Let’s start talking again.’ We got to stop.” And he keeps talking, but not taking any action.

Donald Trump doesn’t take action, but this doesn’t stop the parents of the affected. For example, these Iowa moms took action to make sure their kids are safe. “So this school shooting has me so freaked out,” wrote Breanne McEntee. “I think we need to start talking again about buying/requiring every classroom have ‘The Sleeve”… Maybe we can do a fundraiser or something? Ideas?”

There are many things that we can do to decrease the numbers of school shootings. The more we do, the less chances there is for shootings to happen. For example, bullying is something that can create mental illness, which can lead to them shooting people later in life. If we can make sure the bullying goes away, this can help the future of our nation. We could also take safety precautions and lock all doors, not just put magnetic slips. One very important thing that could help is install cameras all around campus that could be accessible to the staff in the office.

In conclusion, school shootings are terrible and should never happen. No human should ever live in fear of being shot and killed. School shootings have and will affect more people, if we don’t do anything about it.
